There’s nothing like a home photoshoot with a newspaper to inspire a makeover!
Allow me to backtrack for a second.
Last month, I was contacted by the Sunday Mail here in Adelaide, with the lovely offer of featuring our home in the Home & Life magazine. Of course, I said yes! I answered their interview questions via email and then we locked in a date for their photographer to pay us a visit.
Naturally, I saw this as the perfect excuse to give our place a little makeover.
Before hitting the shops, I asked my friend Yvette who owns Ruby Red Star Homewares to pop over and give me some decorating advice. She hooked me up with some items from her online store and then pointed me in the direction of a couple of other stores, including Oscar + Willow and Kmart to purchase the remaining items to complete the look.
And here’s the result…
Cushions from Ruby Red Star
Faux Sheepskin from Kmart
Sonia Styling Q&A with the Sunday Mail Home & Life Magazine
Work life… Blogger at Sonia Styling and Chief Storyteller at Scribe+Social
Career highlight… I was in a national campaign for Katies. Seeing myself in their catalogue and on posters in-store was surreal!
I’ve lived in my home for… Nearly six years.
My home is a… 1900 symmetrical villa.
I live with… my husband and our Shetland Sheepdog, Amalfi.
I love my home because… it’s the perfect blend of an entertainer’s paradise and a haven to escape from the rest of the world.
But I still need to… finish our renovation! There’s at least one job still to be done in every room of the house.
My decorating style is… I’m all about the warm, comfortable and inviting, and things that make me smile.
My first car was… a 1991 white Mitsubishi Lancer. Oh how I loved the independence… but not the cassette deck!
I like to listen to… music constantly! Currently, it’s a mix of The xx, Lorde, The Chainsmokers, London Grammar and Adele.
Recent purchase… a fabulous grey linen-look quilt cover set from Kmart.
I collect… props for photoshoots. I can’t help it – I’m a blogger!
Favourite room… our back room. It’s an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge that my husband designed as part of our extension. It has the most magnificent light and it’s the room we spend the most time in.
Describe 3 of your favourite items and why you love them:
+ Our stone fireplace. There’s nothing better than being curled up on the couch with a glass of red wine and the fireplace blazing.
+ Our dog, Amalfi. He’s the heartbeat of our home and our fur baby. He brings so much joy to our lives and to our home.
+ The chandeliers in our hallway. They were an engagement gift from my husband’s family and the first beautiful items we put up during the renovation.
I couldn’t live without… my iPhone – closely followed by my husband!
When I get home at night, I… help my husband cook dinner and we share tales of the day.
At weekends I like to… catch up with friends and enjoy good food, great wine and plenty of laughs.
Clean freak or messy Bessie? Clean freak – I’m a Virgo!
On my wish list is… lots of artwork to fill our walls.
When I’m home I like to cook… I’m not much of a cook but I can put together a great platter!
Fave restaurant… Parisi’s on King William Road. It’s a date night favourite of ours.
In my garden I have… lots of Big Red shrubs surrounding our backyard with Sir Walter Buffalo grass that my husband looks after so well it feels like plush carpet under your feet.
When I was a child I wanted to be… a florist, a pop star or a physio. I clearly became none of those!
Dream holiday destination… Croatia in the summertime. I want to explore the gorgeous coastline and soak up the culture.
Something you want to achieve in the next 10 years? I have no idea what the future holds, but I’d like to be living a happy life with my loved ones.
My neighbours are… awesome! They are the type of people who will collect your mail, bring your bins in, give you homegrown fruit and veg, and are always up for a chat.
If I could afford it I would live… I love where we live, so I’d be happy to stay here forever. Though my husband would love a house in the foothills overlooking the city. One day! Maybe.
Home means… my sanctuary.
