The Bag or The Shoes?

For as long as time has existed, the question for women everywhere has remained the same:

“The bag or the shoes?”

I’ve had numerous conversations over the years with women about whether they would be happy to splash their cash on an expensive pair of shoes or whether they would prefer to save their pennies for a designer handbag.

The results have been fairly evenly split in my experience (and there has also been a very small group that doesn’t seem bothered by either).

The bag or the shoes?

Me? I’m Team Bag.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a well crafted, beautiful heel as much as the next Carrie Bradshaw aficionado, however I seem to fall in and out of love with shoes.

Having said that, I do agree that a classic black leather pointed toe pump never, ever dates – so that would be my one exception to the rule. And if I happened to be in the US and there just so happened to be a sale on a certain red soled wonder, it would be an offer too good for me to refuse.

The bag or the shoes?

But back to the bag.

I tend to carry the same handbag every day. The only time I’ll swap it out is to downsize for evening with a clutch that matches what I’m wearing. I’ve always been happy to buy “cheapie” bags – until now. My current handbag is on its last legs and I feel the time is right to take the leap and invest in a quality carry-all.

I’ve done quite a bit of research which has led me to this beauty and very soon she will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine.

I’m looking forward to having a beautiful bag of superior quality and one that will hopefully be the start of a rainbow collection…!

So tell me, are you Team Bag or Team Shoes? Or Team Not Bothered?

Have you ever splurged? What did you buy?

When I clicked on the link I was hoping your “beauty” would be a Michael Kors bag! I am definitely Team Bag. I own a few MK bags/wallets – you will not be disappointed!

I will only buy gorgeous bags never cheap ones but I might only splurge once a year but I like shoes too!

I always buy quality bags and shoes, they are the 2 things that get loads of use so quality will go the distance. I only ever buy leather bags for that same reason, if you treat them well they just get better with age. Because I have large feet leather shoes are a must too, with the exception of a pair of target sandals that I picked up this summer.

take or leave fashion clothes! … team shoes and bags here! … oh dear!
always been the shoe girl! … but always need a beautiful bag!
when I grew up it was mandatory to have the matching bag! i’ll blame that!
lol m:)X … enjoy your day!

Both. Yes, I know. I AM greedy!
With the exception of 3 pairs of jelly shoes, I only wear leather on my tootsies. And if they are not comfortable when I try them on, I won’t part with my cash.
Bags have to special to me. Good quality leather investment pieces…I’m obsessed with my Mulberry (so English) – handcrafted artistry at its best!

I’m torn at this dilemma. I am such a shoe girl but like you said you have one bag you use for most things. So yes, i agree as we get older we should spend more on a beautiful bag. I LOVE that bag you have chosen. Cant wait to see it!!

You won’t be disappointed with the quality of Michael Kors! I purchased one on holiday last year and absolutely love it. Just be careful of the Saffiano leather – it marks easily so look after it and wipe down every week. Enjoy xxx

I love both and it’s so hard to choose because I am a major shoe addict! Having said that I tend to invest in quality handbags because they get used a lot more and generally last a lot longer. I still have my first oroton bag I got 10 years ago and it’s still in good condition. I also bought myself an LV speedy for my 30th last year too so I guess I’m definitely pro bag! I’m loving the MK bag you have picked Sonia – are you getting the purple one? X

    Hi Sonia

Like Merrilyn, I grew up in the era of matching shoes and handbags – and have to admit, I’m still quite partial to this concept but it does make for very expensive outfits. And, for some reason, the handbags always seem to outlive the shoes. Now it’s all about accessories complementing (but not necessarily matching the outfit).

Starting both a bag and shoe collection is a must for longevity. If you wear the same shoes and carry the same bag everyday, it will shorten their lifespan but even if you have two or three different ones of high rotation you will make a difference. Of course, your new MK bag will take pride of place for those days when you want “to look the business”, but a lovely straw basket will look equally as good when you rock your flat sandals and maxi dresses.

That’s an excellent tip to have a few good quality handbags in rotation. I’ll start with the grey MK and go from there!

I’m team…BOTH! I’ve invested in a more expensive bag, but it’s not for everyday use as it’s rather small…actually I take that back, I CAN use it every day I just don’t want too! Too precious! hahaha! I’ve splurged on high quality boots, because let’s face it, the good ones last longer and I need my boots to go the distance. But I can shut both eyes and buy cheaper shoes. So long as they’re gorgeous on my feet! 😀

It’s funny. I read this post & all the comments switching my answer back & forth…I think I’m in that very small group that’s not bothered by either. Lol
I have a closet of shoes, from inexpensive to pricy-ish & handbags the same. I think the most I’ve spent is on a Spencer & Rutherford handbag back in the day… So maybe I am team handbag. I do have some pricy Sachi boots but to me it doesn’t count as I got them for free thanks to a relo that worked where they were sold (moons ago).
So I again sit on a fence… But I do feel more comfortable slinging that money over my shoulder rather than scraping it on the ground. Lol happy shopping!

“I do feel more comfortable slinging that money over my shoulder rather than scraping it on the ground.” – absolutely love that, Kim! Good one!

I’m definitely team bag! I’m too hard on my shoes so I always worry I will ruin expensive shoes. I bought a classic pair of black Louboutins and a pair of Chanel ballet flats and to be honest I don’t wear them nearly as much as I should for fear of ruining the. However when it comes to handbags of the designer variety well then I’m a handbag whore. Over the last 15 years I have saved and bought designer bags. It started with a classic LV tote and its grown from there. I take such good care of them and love them like children. I can justify the money I spend on them because I’ve had them years and I know I’ll have them forever and can even pass them onto my daughter. I can be wearing a pair of jeans from target with a top from Katies and whack a chanel or LV bag with it and makes the outfit look a million bucks.
