I’m Giving Up…

Support Sonia Styling during Dry July

Hold onto your hats, people: this is one announcement sure to blow a few heads back…

I’m giving up alcohol.

Not for good, but for good.

I’ve decided to take part in Dry July.

Dry July is a fundraiser that challenges you to go alcohol-free for a month to support adults living with cancer, giving them a chance to improve their wellbeing by providing funds to create better services and environments for them and their families.

Dry July takes a light hearted approach to raising funds for a serious issue. It’s a challenge of determination that rewards its participants with a sense of achievement and feeling of wellbeing.

I’ve nominated the Dry July Foundation as my preferred beneficiary so that every donation – no matter where it’s made – will support cancer services organisations across Australia. Funds will be evenly distributed amongst 42 beneficiaries in each state’s Dry July Foundation Funding Program.

Now, I realise that at this point some people might be a tad confused, considering the fact I have my very own happy hour related hashtag (#soniastylinghappyhour) – but to me it makes perfect sense.

You see, the philosophy behind my hashtag is to spend time doing what makes you happy. It may well be a glass of wine with dinner. It could also be curling up on the couch to read a magazine from cover to cover, uninterrupted. It could even be making the best damn green smoothie ever.

So I’ll not only be using Dry July but also #soniastylinghappyhour to inspire myself and my husband {yep, he’s doing it too!} to spend our free time trying different things.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

  • go to the movies
  • take Amalfi for a long drive and have a picnic somewhere beautiful
  • go bowling
  • discover some new dog parks for Amalfi to have a play at
  • try some breakfast spots we’ve never visited

I’m also seeing this as a chance to focus on myself, my health and wellbeing. To hit the reset button and {hopefully} slow down the pace of life a little (if I can!).

The challenge kicks off on Wednesday 1 July and every donation over $2 is tax deductible.

If you’d like to throw your support behind Australian adults living with cancer, their families and to show your belief in me, you can make a donation on my personal Dry July page.

Right, let’s get this (dry) party started!

Are you participating in Dry July this year?

What activities should we try in our spare time?

What are your favourite non-alcoholic drinks?

I always want to do dry July but both mine and hubster’s birthday both fall in July and somehow we just can’t manage it! Good on you though, what a great cause! I’ve got this thing about trying crazy golf (or putt putt, I’m not sure if it has a different name down under,) and my other favourite non-alcoholic activities include going for a run, going for a bushwalk or having a booze free high tea!

Oh heck no – not when it’s double Birthday Month! I’ve also done FebFast in February (easier cos it’s 3 days shorter but harder cos it’s in summer and everything is happening) and then there’s Ocsober in October. Mini golf! I haven’t played that in years. It’s getting added to the list.

Good for Sonia. Its good to challenge oneself in the name of a bigger cause. Helps us each reassess some elements of our lifestyle, our priories I think, Poor Cancer patients can barely eat let alone drink during treatment.
p.s. A gorgeous big goblet full of San Pellegrino and a slice of lime is a recommended substitute

Well done, it’s a biggie, I did it a few years ago and I have to say it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be! But I have no doubt you’ve got the determination to see it through! It’s all about changing habits. Good luck!

I gave up drinking 18 months ago! it was easy!
as I have an allergy to sulphites etc
it will be good for detoxing with your allergies!
my sister and i both gave it up and we are happier and our health is better for it!
for a substitute i like to drink mineral water with a dash of lime or lemon or tonic
    always use a beautiful glass!
    good luck! love m:)X.

Kick ass Sonia that’s awesome! I did a year alcohol free and it was amazing. Things to do instead – learn how to make delicious mocktails and throw a fabulous mocktail party, take up a random new hobby (get Carly to teach you how to crochet!), find a new TV show obsession, watch Simpsons re-runs and hey, just think… the booze money becomes clothes money. 🙂

Dry July? I haven’t had a drink in like 6 years. It’s kind of awesome. I remember things I said the night before. I’m a lot less puffy. My shoe collection has quadrupled.

Fun sober activities for 2 (or more)!
Someone already said mini golf. I second that.
    Day spa/couples’ massage
    Zoo/aquarium/botanical gardens
    Book/film club
