Welcome to the fifth episode of My Fave Room for 2015!
If you’re anything like me, you love nothing more than a behind the scenes look at other people’s homes.
And me being the inquisitive blogger that I am, I’ve managed to convince some of our favourite bloggers to share their favourite room with us.
In the first episode last year, we got to hang out in the very funky office of Tessa from Down that Little Lane. Our second episode saw us visiting the beautiful kitchen of Beth from BabyMac. In the third episode, we had a rather interesting tour of the laundry belonging to Mrs Woog. And our final episode for 2014 saw us spending some time in Nikki from Styling You’s ahhhmazing Lady Room.
This year’s season premiere was a very cool and funky affair as we hung out in the office-slash-bar of Jim and Christina, AKA Mr and Mrs Romance, followed by a very warm and inviting hang out in Bron from Maxabella Loves’ living room, then a bright and bubbly visit to Sonia from Life, Love & Hiccups’ home office, and a tour of the home belonging to the fabulous Gillian from Champagne Cartel.
Today, we get to hang out with the wickedly funny and ridiculously talented Danielle from Keeping Up With The Holsbys…
Which room of your house is your favourite?
I love my bedroom, and I adore the art deco renovation I did on the main bathroom, but hands down my favourite room in the house is the combined kitchen, lounge, and dining area. It is the heart of the home and where we spend the most time. My office chair is at the table because I usually sit there to work (close to the kitchen for endless trips to pantry for munching.
When I first walked into this house when we were looking to buy this room was what I fell in love with. I’d never had an open plan living area with a good kitchen so it really was love at first site.
What makes it so special?
Aside from the fact that we can all be doing our thing and still be in the room together, I simply love the light. In the morning the light streams in making it look beautiful. We get sun all day which is important to me. Dark rooms make me feel closed in and sad. The windows in this room give it an almost atrium feel.
I also love that it’s a comfortable family home. I enjoy looking at spotless and faultlessly stylish homes in magazines but that will never be my house. Mister Potato Head lives in the lounge as does the kids’ play kitchen, plus a million other toys all stashed in a box when they’re not strewn everywhere. Under the couch is a whole ecosystem but luckily the photos don’t show that.
What’s your favourite item in the room and why?
It’s hard because I’ve filled the room with knick knacks I’ve collected along the way and they all have such sentimental value. I’m just nuts about my wallpaper which we got shipped from the UK, and the gold mirror totally makes that space but I think my absolute favourite thing is the brass table that my father bought in Morocco when he was in his early 20’s. I learned to walk holding on to that table, and I begged my mum to save it until I had a home with a lounge room large enough to accommodate it. It really needs a polish but I never seem to get around to it.
What are your go-to stores for decorating?
I’m an eBayer, vintage store and an op shopper mostly, unless I found it on the side of the road… I passionately dislike IKEA and I’m really crazy about interesting one off pieces. Now and again I go through a delicious homewares store and covet all of the crazy expensive things. Down that Little Lane always makes me drool as they have eclectic and cool pieces.
My picture frames and rocking chair were all road side finds that I gave a slick of paint to, as were my red kitchen stools. Basically I’m a hunter gatherer scavenging type.
What items are on your wish list for this room?
I want to chop off the top of that kitchen bench and add a large farm style wooden table top which would be a breakfast bar come family space, which would also be perfect for me to shoot my Holsby TV at. I hate the laminate and want more natural wood in the room. I’d also then get a hanging ladder vive over it and totally French myself up with hanging pots and plants.
I also really need a new couch because my cat, Mister Fluffy Pants, aka The Jerk, has completely destroyed the fabric because he decided he’s too cool for a scratching post, but I kind of figure right now it’s smarter to wait 5 years until the kids stop smearing banana and milk all over it and I can get something a little more luxe. I’ll keep it a vibrant colour though. I’m not much of a muted tone kinda gal.
- A room needs good corners. Little vignettes or styled corners really brings a room to life.
- I also like personality so you can get a feel for who lives there.
- No clutter, hard to achieve with kids, and if you’re prone to making piles like I am, but when it’s all nice and ordered it just looks so much more lovely. I need to disclose that these images were taken after serious tidying, and will probably never look like this again.
