Our week away in Robe

Some of you might remember late last year, we were planning a “drop and flop” holiday for the first quarter of 2019.

We back-and-forthed over where to go, when and for how long… and it just wouldn’t come together.

Then, one day, we said to each other – what if we just go for a local getaway? Somewhere we could drive for a few hours, be near the beach and take our doggo, Amalfi.

And so we decided on…

Robe is a beachside town, about a 4-hour drive from Adelaide.

It’s beautiful. It’s relaxed. It’s got awesome shops and cafes. Basically, it’s my soulmate town!

Here’s a little run down of where we stayed, what we did and some of our favourite spots.

Where we stayed

We stayed at Villa Malmo, a gorgeous beachside holiday home located 150 meters from the pristine and sparkling Long Beach.

It’s a beautifully decorated and comfortable large family home with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Every little detail has been considered and catered for – especially in the kitchen. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, and we all slept soooo well… which wasn’t surprising considering we could hear the waves crashing from our bedroom. There’s also NBN wifi (a must for a digi nerd like me!).

It’s dog friendly. {YASSS!} And has the most magnificent, enclosed backyard with plenty of grass for pooches and a fabulous undercover area with a BBQ, lounge and dining spots for humans.

Another added bonus of this home is that when you book, you don’t pay extra for more people AND the cleaning fee is already included in the rate. It’s those little things that make a big difference in clicking to book, don’t you think?

We loved being a 2-minute walk from Long Beach and each morning and afternoon, we’d take Amalfi for a stroll. Best way to start (and finish) the day!

What we did

This holiday for us was all about slowing down, switching off and not doing much at all… so our daily itinerary was not that exciting!

Each day started with a beach walk along Long Beach. We’d then head back to Villa Malmo to make our breakfast, get ready and then drive 5 minutes into the town centre of Robe.

A mid-morning coffee stop was next on the agenda and… honestly? We went to the same place every single day – Drift!

Then we’d go for a little drive or wander to explore a bit.

We loved discovering the stories of Robe, stopping to read signs and plaques on buildings and monuments. So much history and character!

After this, it was time for a workout. We improvised at home and did HIIT circuits in the backyard. Chris also went to the local gym a couple of times. And – of course – beach walks were a staple.

Next – lunch! We ate out for lunch each day, as after lunch we’d head to the local Foodland to stock up on supplies for dinner.

Finally, it was back to Villa Malmo for Happy Hour, a game of Scrabble, another beach walk, dinner and bed.

Where we ate and drank

Drift – this daily favourite of ours only opened recently (around December 2018, I believe). A fabulous spot to enjoy breakfast, coffee or lunch – we sat outside in the sunshine, so Amalfi could chill out on the grass. They also have some cute board games to play. We had a couple of Connect 4 and Jenga battles during the week!

No. 4 – we had lunch here one of the days, soaking up the glorious sunshine in their back courtyard while enjoying a cheeseburger, fish and chips, and a chilled bottle of Pinot Grigio. This is definitely another dog friendly venue – in fact, they have their own menu for four-legged diners! Super relaxed vibe, which we enjoyed.

The Adventurous Spoon – we only had coffee here, but we loved the setting. Nestled underneath a huge leafy tree, it has a dog friendly enclosed outdoor area, as well as lovely little spots to sit outside under the branches. The food that we saw other people ordering looked delicious. We think you’d be hard pressed to find a bad spot to eat and drink in Robe!

The Governor Robe – another newbie to the town, we stumbled across this quaint little cottage-cafe-wine bar thanks to the recommendation of locals. Thursday was an especially beautiful day, so we sat outside in the front courtyard of “the Gov” and enjoyed a glass of Rosé while listening to jazz and chatting to more locals. Bliss!

The Caledonian Inn – did someone say “Happy Hour”?! The Cally, as it’s affectionately known, is a historic English style pub in the heart of the main street of Robe. Think: food, drinks, accommodation and live music – all set to the backdrop of the ocean. It’s a very relaxed and friendly place and we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink here on Friday.

Karatta Wines this adorable cellar door caught our eye on the first day… but we resisted the temptation to visit until later in the week! These are super drinkable, cool climate wines from estate vines grown locally. And you can enjoy a complimentary tasting of 4 wines of your choice, either inside in the space shared with the art gallery or in the adjoining courtyard outside under the wine leaves.

Rise of Robe – this little bakery is a tiny hole in the wall, located next to Karatta Wines. We’re talking the best sourdough and fruit toast everrrr! Get there in the morning and bring cash. There’s no EFTPOS and once the bread is gone, the door is closed. And I promise you, you do not want to miss out on this spectacular sourdough!

Sails Restaurant we decided to make Friday night Date Night, and at the recommendation of locals, we booked ourselves in for dinner at Sails Restaurant. Sails specialises in the seafood, steak and wines from the Limestone Coast. We shared the sashimi and saganaki for entree and then had separate pasta dishes for main. Oh. My. Goodness! We rolled out of there, full and happy.

And the next morning, we bid a fond farewell to Robe.

But you can bet we’ll back!
