We all love it when the sun’s out, right? We’re happier, we have more fun… but summer can also wreak havoc on our hair.
Damage and dryness can easily set in if we’re not careful, but fear not! I’ve got some simple tips to keep your locks looking amazing as the sun sets on these warmer months.
Here’s how to make sure you end the season with healthy hair.
Less is more
The temptation to wash your every day in the summer is pretty high, but it’s not the best idea. Over-shampooing can increase the drying effect from the heat, so stick to daily warm water rinses (if you need) and leave the bubbly stuff to two or three times a week max. If you feel like you need it, you can use our old friend, dry shampoo in the days between.
Condition, condition, condition
As we already know, our hair is prone to drying out in the summer so it needs an extra moisture boost. That includes conditioning every time you wash your hair. A rinse-out product is fine, but the addition of a leave-in deep conditioning treatment once a week will give you lovely, shiny, swishy hair.
Don’t add to the heat
Your lovely locks have had to deal with plenty of heat all summer, so don’t add to that stress when you don’t need to. That means not washing your hair with piping hot water. Warm or even cool water is the way to go. Also, hold off on the styling tools if you can. I’m not saying never use them in summer (total curling wand addict speaking here!), just ease up a little and embrace that relaxed, natural, beachy look.
Keep things covered
Intense sun can irritate your skin, we all know that, but it can also wreak havoc with your hair. With that in mind, one of the best summer hair care tips is to keep out of the direct sun as much as you can and seek shade during the hottest part of the day. There’s an added bonus with this one – the chance to treat yourself to a new hat or two, or a gorgeous headscarf. It’s a great way to add a pop of colour to your outfit too! To cover all bases you should also use hair care and styling products that have decent levels of SPF.
The only way is up
We’ve talked about the need to step away from the straighteners and curling wands in summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock some fabulous hairstyles. Play around with loose ponytails and messy buns to create that beachy boho look. Not only do they look great, these styles can also give added protection to your hair too. Just be mindful not to style too tight as that can pull or even tear hair that’s potentially dry from the sun.
So there you go! Five of my best (end of) summer hair care tips that’ll keep your hair looking gorgeous for the rest of the season, my beach babes.
